Condemned

A group of criminals, having been awaked from cryostasis centuries after being condemned to it are informed by the judge that neither psychology, nor medicine, nor society has yet learned an appropriate means of rectifying their atypical consciences or of providing them with meaningful lives, and so re-commits them to stasis.

I wrote the piece mostly from a place of dismay at the modern prison system. It fails to rehabilitate; it was always meant to deter crime, not transform the criminal. But, surely, criminals are not beyond saving. They ought not be shut away where we need not think of them: They ought to be redeemed.
