Weighty Matters
I've always held that emotions are better dealt with through magic than science.
The short story "Weighty Matters" briefly depicts a world in which magic has become common place despite a troubling consequence that the world has apparently chosen to ignore.
There are many such benefits today: we wonder whether cellphones cause cancer; we wonder whether antibiotics will create super-bugs; we wonder whether the machines that produce our cheap goods will also steal our jobs.
But these wonderings do nothing to dissuade our lifestyles. We excel at embracing dangerous tools, so long as the consequences may be deferred for years to come. Magic would be no different.
