Switch

The reader finds Max Dougher admiring his collection of some of the rarest sorts of plants. In this world, plants have become currency. He begins a business transaction, but he is interrupted and informed that plants are no longer currency, having been supplanted by small rodents. He then immediately forgets his plant collection and begins scrambling after ways to collect small rodents. His word choice implies this sort of switch has happened rather frequently in the past.

Dystopian, post-apocalyptic tones aside, this story is really rather comedic. It is meant to recapture that feeling a child might experience on growing up only to discover that one of the sets of toys or video game characters they have spent their life collecting is worth nothing to others and suddenly worth nothing to them.
